Can You Ride a Jet Ski in Salt Water? Yes—Here’s What to Do Afterward

October 13, 2026 2 min read

Yes, many personal watercraft are ridden in salt water. The important part is what happens after the ride. Salt left on the ski, in the cooling passages, and on the trailer can contribute to corrosion. Make a freshwater rinse and inspection part of every saltwater outing.

Before You Launch

Check the weather, tides, and your planned route. Make sure the drain plugs are installed and inspect the hull, intake, and trailer. Bring the safety equipment required where you ride.

If you bought the ski used, locate its owner’s manual. The correct flushing connection, sequence, and time limit depend on the make and model. Do not assume a procedure you used on another ski applies to this one.

Follow Your Model’s Flushing Instructions

After the ride, flush the cooling system with fresh water exactly as the manufacturer directs. Follow the manual’s order for starting and stopping the engine and water supply. An incorrect sequence can damage an engine, so check the instructions before connecting a hose.

Flushing is only one part of the job. Rinse salt and sand from the exterior, footwells, pump area, and accessible trailer surfaces. Keep the hose stream away from openings or electrical components where the manufacturer cautions against direct spraying.

Let the Ski Dry and Check the Hull

Remove the drain plugs when the ski is out of the water, as directed by your manual, and check for unexpected water or fuel inside the hull. Dry accessible areas and provide ventilation during storage. Inspect metal parts and use only the corrosion protection products and methods appropriate for your model.

Pay attention to the trailer, too. Rinse the frame, wheels, brakes if equipped, lights, and hardware according to the trailer manufacturer’s guidance. Check its bearings and other components on the recommended service schedule.

Saltwater Care Is a Routine

You do not need to avoid salt water to enjoy your jet ski. You do need to make after-ride care as automatic as removing your life jacket. Keep the owner’s manual handy, use the right flush kit for your model, and take a few minutes to inspect the ski before putting it away.
