Impeller & Wear Ring: The Complete Buyer's Guide

The impeller and wear ring are the heart of your jet ski's propulsion system — and they're also the source of more buyer confusion than almost any other part we sell. Every week, customers contact us with questions like "what pitch should I get?", "do I need stainless or aluminum?", and "do I have to replace both at the same time?" This guide answers all of it, using real questions from real riders.

What Is an Impeller and What Does It Do?

The impeller is a rotating, propeller-like blade inside your jet pump housing that draws water in and expels it at high velocity — creating thrust. The wear ring is the cylindrical sleeve surrounding the impeller that maintains a tight clearance to maximize efficiency. When that clearance grows due to wear, debris damage, or rock strikes, performance drops and cavitation increases.

Do I Need to Replace Both at the Same Time?

Almost always, yes. The impeller and wear ring wear together. Installing a new impeller against a worn ring leaves a gap that causes cavitation and kills performance. Similarly, a pitted or grooved wear ring won't seat properly with a new impeller. Replace them as a set — it costs only a little more and protects your investment.

Understanding Pump Size: 139.5mm vs. 155mm

This is one of the most common ordering mistakes we see. Some models — particularly Sea-Doo GTI and GTX lines — come in two different pump configurations depending on whether it's a base consumer model or a rental/commercial model. The rental version often has a larger-diameter shaft and a 155mm pump, while the standard model uses a 139.5mm pump. The impellers are not interchangeable.

Impeller Pitch Explained: What the Numbers Mean

Impeller pitch is expressed as two numbers — for example, 11/19 or 13/21. The first number is the pitch of the leading (inlet) blades; the second is the pitch of the trailing (exit) blades.

  • Lower pitch numbers (e.g., 11/16) = more low-end torque and hole shot — better for towing or pulling tubes
  • Higher pitch numbers (e.g., 14/21) = more top-end speed — better for open-water riders who want to maximize MPH
  • Stock pitch = the balanced OEM choice for all-around performance

If you're just replacing a worn impeller and want the same feel as stock, match your OEM pitch exactly. If you want to tune performance, move up or down one step at a time — big pitch jumps without other mods can actually hurt performance.

Stainless Steel vs. Aluminum Impellers

Both work well, but they serve different riders:

  • Aluminum impellers are lighter, less expensive, and the default OEM choice for most models. If you're replacing a worn impeller to restore stock performance, aluminum is the right call.
  • Stainless steel impellers are significantly more durable — especially if you ride in sandy, rocky, or debris-filled water. A stainless impeller resists dings and nicks that would ruin an aluminum one. They cost more upfront but outlast multiple aluminum replacements in harsh conditions.

Note: stainless impellers work in both plastic and aluminum pump housings. If you have a plastic housing with heavy pitting where the impeller meets the housing wall, that's the housing itself that needs replacement — not just the wear ring.

The Tool You Can't Forget

Impeller removal requires a specific spanner tool matched to your pump. Without it, you risk damaging the impeller hub trying to improvise. Signs You Need a New Impeller or Wear Ring

  • Loss of top speed or reduced acceleration
  • Cavitation (engine revs but ski doesn't respond — feels like a slipping clutch)
  • Visible nicks, bends, or missing material on impeller blades
  • Visible scratches, grooves, or pitting inside the pump housing
  • Unusual vibration at speed
