Upgrading Your Jet Ski Impeller for Better Performance

The impeller is one of the few components on a jet ski you can change to meaningfully alter how the machine performs — and it costs a fraction of what engine work runs. Whether you want to pull more wake, hit higher top speeds, or just get off the line faster, understanding impeller pitch is the foundation of any PWC performance conversation.

How an Impeller Creates Thrust

Your jet ski's impeller is a multi-bladed rotor inside the jet pump housing. As it spins, it draws water in from below and ejects it at high pressure from the rear nozzle. The angle (pitch) of the blades determines how much water is moved per revolution — and that's where the performance tradeoff lives.

Understanding Impeller Pitch Numbers

Impeller pitch is expressed as two numbers, such as 11/19, 13/21, or 14/23. These represent the inlet pitch (leading blade angle) and exit pitch (trailing blade angle).

  • Lower numbers = more torque, faster acceleration, better hole shot. The impeller "bites" into water more aggressively, generating thrust immediately. This is what you want for towing tubes, wake surfing, or getting out of rough water quickly.
  • Higher numbers = higher top speed, less torque. The impeller moves more water per revolution at high RPM, but takes longer to build speed. This suits flat-water blasting and racing.

Stock OEM impellers are a compromise — tuned by the factory to balance acceleration, fuel efficiency, and longevity for the widest range of riders. Aftermarket performance impellers specialize in one end of that spectrum.

What Does "Stock Pitch" Mean for My Model?

Stock pitch varies by engine and model. A few common examples:

  • Sea-Doo GTI 130 — approximately 11/19 pitch
  • Yamaha GP800R — approximately 11/14 pitch (2-blade design)

If you're simply replacing a worn impeller to restore stock feel, match the OEM pitch exactly. If you're upgrading, start by going up one step in exit pitch — big jumps without corresponding engine or fuel system modifications can cause overrevving, cavitation, or loss of performance.

Impeller Upgrades by Riding Style

"I Want More Top Speed"

Move to a higher exit pitch — increase the second number by 2–4 points from stock. Understand that your hole shot will suffer somewhat. This works best on skis with adequate horsepower to turn the higher pitch efficiently. On lower-powered models (130–155hp), going too high creates a situation where the engine can't spin the prop fast enough to be effective — you'll actually lose speed.

"I Want a Better Hole Shot for Towing"

Lower inlet pitch — decrease the first number. The ski will accelerate harder off the line, making it easier to pull a tube or wake surfer up quickly. Top speed will be slightly lower.

"I Want Both" (All-Around Performance)

Stainless Steel Is Essential for Performance Use

Aluminum impellers are fine for stock replacement, but if you're upgrading for performance, go stainless steel. Aluminum impellers flex slightly at high RPM, reducing efficiency — stainless holds its shape under load. They also resist damage from debris much better, which matters when you're pushing speeds where a rock strike can do real damage to an aluminum blade.

Don't Forget: New Wear Ring, Alignment Tool

Any time you're changing an impeller for performance reasons, replace the wear ring at the same time. The tighter clearance between a new impeller and a new wear ring directly translates to more thrust — a worn ring will give back some of your performance gains. You'll also need an impeller removal/installation tool specific to your pump size. Don't try to improvise — damaged hubs are expensive.

After the Upgrade: What to Watch For

  • Cavitation — feels like the engine revs but the ski doesn't respond, like a clutch slipping. Usually means the pitch is too high for your engine's power output, or there's a pump seal issue.
  • Overrevving — engine hits the rev limiter too easily, especially at wide-open throttle. Your pitch may be too low — the engine is running out of load before it runs out of RPM.
  • Normal performance gain — the ski will feel more responsive, pull harder, or run faster depending on which direction you moved the pitch.
